Temples of Kashi, India: Varanasi, Banaras – The Eternal Soul of India with Three Sacred Names

Kashi

(The Spiritual Light): In the Indian tradition, Kashi is known as the ‘City of Light’ (Sanskrit: Kas). It is believed that this is the place where spiritual wisdom shines brighter than the sun. To an Indian, Kashi is not just a city, but a path to Moksha (liberation).

Varanasi

(The Sacred Confluence): This name carries the geography of our holy land. It comes from the meeting of two mystical rivers—Varuna and Asi. For thousands of years, these waters have witnessed the prayers of saints and seekers.

Banaras

(The Living Culture): This is the heartbeat of the local people. Banaras is where you find the world-famous silk sarees, the taste of ‘Banarasi Paan’, and the soulful music of the Ghats. It represents the joy and vibrancy of Indian life.

Kashi, also known as Varanasi, is one of the world’s oldest continually inhabited cities and the spiritual capital of India. Located on the banks of the holy Ganges, it is revered as the abode of Lord Shiva. The city is famous for its iconic Kashi Vishwanath Temple, vibrant Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat, and its timeless spiritual energy. A journey to Kashi is a path to liberation, offering a profound experience of ancient traditions, culture, and ultimate peace.”

Must – visit Places:

1.Kashi Vishwanath Temple: The main Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva

2.Dashashwamedh Ghat: Famous for the world-renowned Evening Ganga Aarti.

3.Assi Ghat: Famous for the “Subah-e-Banaras” (Morning Aarti) and Yoga.

4.Sarnath: The holy place where Lord Buddha gave his first sermon.

5.Sankat Mochan Temple: A historic temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman.

6.Manikarnika Ghat: The most sacred and oldest cremation ghat.

7.Kaal Bhairav Temple: Dedicated to the “Guardian Deity” of Kashi.

8.New Vishwanath Temple (BHU): A grand white marble temple inside BHU campus.

9.Tulsi Manas Temple: The place where Ramcharitmanas was written.

Varanasi, the world’s oldest living city, is where spirituality flows like the Ganges itself. At its very soul lies the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, the ‘Ruler of the Universe.’ It is said that Kashi rests on the trident of Mahadev, and a visit here is a journey toward liberation (Moksha).

The Grandeur of the New Corridor
The temple has undergone a magnificent transformation. The newly built Kashi Vishwanath Corridor now connects the sacred temple directly to the river Ganges.
A Divine Walk: You can now take a holy dip at the Ghat and walk straight to the temple premises through a beautiful, wide path.
The Golden Spire: Don’t forget to look up! The temple’s main spire is plated with pure gold, shimmering with a divine glow that stays with you long after you leave.

Plan Your Visit Like a Pro
The Best Time: If you can, try to attend the Mangala Aarti at 3:00 AM. It is a soul-stirring experience that words cannot describe. Otherwise, early morning is the best time for a peaceful Darshan.
Temple Timings: Usually, the doors are open from 4:00 AM to 11:00 PM.
What to Leave Behind: To keep your visit hassle-free, remember that mobile phones, leather belts, wallets, and any electronics are strictly not allowed inside. There are safe lockers available nearby, but keeping them at your hotel is often the easiest option.
A Friendly Note: Varanasi is a city of festivals! Timings for Darshan and Aarti can change during special occasions. I recommend checking the local notice boards or asking the temple staff when you arrive for the most accurate updates.

Don’t Miss the ‘Banarasi’ Flavors! (Pet Pooja)
Your spiritual journey isn’t complete without tasting the soul of Banaras—its food!
Breakfast Bliss: Start your morning in the narrow lanes with the legendary Kachori-Sabzi and Jalebi.
The Iconic Treats:
End your tour with a thick Malai Lassi served in an earthen pot (Kulhad) and, of course, the world-famous Banarasi Paan. It’s the perfect way to wrap up your Kashi experience!

“Dashashwamedh Ghat is the most vibrant and legendary landmark of Varanasi. It is world-renowned for the magnificent Ganga Aarti, a spiritual ceremony that takes place every evening at sunset. Visiting this ghat offers a soul-stirring experience, where the glow of thousands of lamps and the chanting of prayers create a divine atmosphere that you will remember forever.”

Reach the ghat at least 30-45 minutes before sunset to get a good viewing spot, or book a boat for a panoramic view of the Aarti

Sub-heading: Subah-e-Banaras:

Unlike the evening aarti at Dashashwamedh, Assi Ghat is world-famous for its early morning ritual called ‘Subah-e-Banaras’. It features a soulful morning Aarti, Vedic chanting, and a mesmerizing classical music performance at sunrise.

Cultural Hub:

This is where the rivers Assi and Ganges meet. It is a center for yoga seekers, students, and artists from across the globe.

To truly experience the magic of Assi Ghat, reach here by 5:00 AM for ‘Subah-e-Banaras’. After the prayers, don’t miss the famous ‘Lemon Tea’ at the local stalls—it’s the best way to start your day in Kashi like a local!
